What is Blogging?

A blog can be seen as an online journal of sorts. It is a platform where a writer or writers can express their thoughts, opinions or own work on a particular subject. This can literally be anything and there is at least one blog about anything you can think of.

Since blogs became a “thing” they have become extremely popular with anyone who is wanting to share what they think. It is a very easy way, if not the easiest way, to share yourself with the world.

Many people often confuse a blog with a website, as in this day and age, many websites incorporate blogs into their sites. There are some key differences between a blog and a website though.

A website can be seen as something that is static almost. There are not regular updates to the site, and there is no real engagement with readers. You go on the site, see the information and then use it.

A blog, on the other hand, is constantly updating as the writer or writers add new content regularly, if not every day. Hence why a blog can be seen as a diary or journal of sorts. Blogs also allow readers to comment on what they have read and engaged with the writer.

In essence, if you have a cool hobby that you want to show the world, or are passionate about reviewing books or movies, whatever it may be, a blog can be your personal platform to share whatever you choose.

How To Start Your Own Blog

Starting your own blog is actually relatively easy. If you already have an idea of what you are going to be writing about or sharing, the hard part is already done. The next step is to find the right platform for your blog.

The best option would be WordPress. WordPress is designed for beginners and therefore is a great platform for anyone to start their blog. You don’t need any coding or design experience, as WordPress makes it easy to do whatever you want on your blog.

Not only does WordPress allow your blog to go live immediately, depending on how far you want to go with it, you are able to buy hosting and a .com from them, making your blog all that more popular and professional.

WordPress also allows for infinite amounts of customization, with themes that allow you to make your blog look exactly how you want it to, and have features that make it unique for your chosen subject, such as incorporating interactive maps if you are a travel blogger.

Another bonus with WordPress is the massive community. Not only do millions of individuals and businesses use it, there are also hundreds of thousands of people who are professionals in any given aspect of it, therefore giving you a solution to any problem you may have.

As mentioned above, WordPress does not require you to have any coding or CSS knowledge, as everything is designed to either be dragged and dropped or simply installed, no need to code something special in.

WordPress also has thousands of plug-ins, which can be likened to tools. These tools allow you to add and monitor anything you may want. You can add your social media buttons, a newsletter, or even just an automated gallery using plug-ins. The options are endless.

Assuming you have chosen WordPress as your prefered platform, the next step is to actually start your blog. Choosing a simple theme and layout at the beginning is the best option, as you don’t want to commit to anything too specific just yet.

After your theme and layout is set up, you will want to write your first post. If you have been thinking about this for a while, you will most likely have a number of ideas in your head. Get them all down, in point form, on paper.

If you are using this blog as a way just to express thoughts and opinions, start writing. Give your post a title, add in your content, and post away. If this is going to be the start of something you want to one day turn into a business or something bigger, take a bit more care in how and what you post.

When writing your posts, avoid huge blocks of writing. Either write in 3 or 4 sentence paragraphs or break up your writing with some images. Make sure the images are good quality, but a lower resolution, as high-resolution images slow down the loading speed of your blog.

Writing your posts is one of the most fun and easiest parts to do. Keeping the blog clean and simple is usually enough for most people, but like mentioned above, if this is something you want to turn into a business or something to make money from, there is a lot more to do.

If you are wanting to monetize your blog, the best thing to do is to simply Google “Monetizing your WordPress blog”, there are thousands of posts on the best options and methods for doing this, as well as how to get the most money out of what you are doing.

Once you are handling the basics efficiently, start exploring the platform and seeing which plugins and tools you can use to expand your blog’s potential. If you have seen a particular feature on a website you really enjoy, there is definitely a plugin that can make it happen.

Blogging is about exploring and discovering new methods to sharing ideas. There is no right way to blog, but as mentioned above, there are some steps to take to at least get you on the right path.

All you can do is get your ideas out there, and grow as your audience grows. If you are passionate about what you are doing and writing about, success and recognition will come, just stay consistent, and change with the times.
